Haleakala Crater has a look and feel all its own. Personally, some of my best memories about Maui are about the visits to Haleakala. You can find a host of web sites that talk about the crater, however, there are a few things that may go unmentioned. The trick to having an incredible experience at Haleakala is timing the weather. This is true for all crater sorties: sunrise seekers and hikers alike. Importantly, the rain or cloudy day does not make the experience unworthy of mention, but a clear sky and a warm day are desirable. Also, the summit of Haleakala is 10,023 feet and cold. Make sure to bring a jacket and blanket especially on a quest to see the sunrise; you will be the envy of the sunrise seekers who are not dressed appropriately. Also, below the summet parking lot is a parking lot for Kalahaku Overlook. This is a short trail and offers an interesting view of the summit and cinder cones below. Haleakala Crater has a plethora of activities and opportunities. If you are a serious hiker I strongly suggest finding out about cabin availability for overnight stays at the base of Haleakala. Cabins can book a few months in advance, so inquire as you make your trip preparations. For hiking enthusiast I think an overnight visit is be a MUST!
