The internet has many articles about Maui activities and geographic history. The links to some of the better articles and web sites are listed in the blue area, on the left. Whether you are a seasoned Hawaii traveler, or a first time visitor, we believe the sites and articles are interesting and informative, and we hope you agree.

There are two types of tourist that visit Maui. Specifically, those on a family vacation and those not traveling with family. If you are wondering what best describes your vacation habits making a distinction is easy. If you are traveling for pleasure and you are bringing one or more minors (children under eighteen) you are traveling on a family vacation. Fortunately, Maui has plenty of room to accommodate both types of travelers. Maui has approximately 727 square miles, is ringed by 120 miles of coast line, and has over 30 miles of beaches. Along the way, a vacationer will find, blue skies, palm trees, sugar cain, pineapple and a host of other tropical familiarities. Each mile is a postcard memory waiting for the visitor. The valley island of Maui can provide lasting memories and has numerous awards bestowed upon its: beaches, restaurants and hotels. Taken together, Maui's magic has not gone unnoticed, that is why over 130,000 Maui County residence and thousands of visitors a year say, "Maui no kai oi" (Maui is the best).

Keeping in mind the distinction between the two different types of travelers, there are two different ways to vacation on Maui. For the family vacationer there are a few weeks during the year that schools are not in session. Obviously, this translates into popular times for family vacations. In late July through August, Maui is host to many summer family vacations. The same is true during December's holidays; that is, there is an increase in the number of families visiting the island. This is not to say only family vacationers have a wonderful visit. However, if you have children or teenagers the added number of young people provides an unique opportunity to meet and socialize with other families. The pools, beaches, and restaurants are all busy with kids and adults. Also, if you are planning to barbeque give yourself a little extra time. Typically, families will gather, toss frizz-bee, eat, socialize and enjoy a beautiful Maui sunset in a casual, fun atmosphere.

For a less active time, June or mid-September can be beautiful months. The traveler will have summer type weather, enjoying warmer temperatures and less chance for rain compared to the winter months. The pools, beaches and restaurants will not be very crowded. Instead of families at the barbeques, the visitor will find open grills and an adult crowd. Typically, there is more of a chatting, sipping wine, grilling steak, type of atmosphere, followed by a romantic Maui sunset.

For those who like lighter crowds and cooler temperatures compared to summer, there are a number of desirable months. October is a wonderful time of year on Maui. It is quiet during October, and it seems to be dryer than some of the other winter months; of course, generally the later into winter the more likely there is a chance for rain. Also, April and May will have light crowds and cooler weather compared to summer. As an added bonus, during April a visitor may see a Humpback Whale traveling off the cost of Maui on a journey back to Alaska.

A very exciting time on the island is whale season. During the months of December through April the Humpback Whales journey from Alaska to Maui, giving birth and mating between the three island group of Maui, Molokai and Lanai. Watching the whales can be done by boat, car, restaurant, cliff, a room with an ocean view, or while sun bathing on the beach -literally anywhere the ocean is in view. By far, the month of February offers the most whale activity. People will gather anywhere stopping, clapping, shouting, honking and cheering as the Humpbacks breech, blow and tail slap. The island crowd will be older and the restaurants wine list longer! This is true, restaurants change menus during the two seasons and the wine lists are more extensive. Also, drivers have to be a bit more alert. When the Humpbacks start breeching near the roads people become crazy. Cars line up bumper to bumper as tourist clamor to catch a glimpse of the gentle giants show; and this is no exaggeration.

No matter what time of year someone plans to take a trip to Maui, they will not be disappointed. Maui is a great host for a family vacation or romantic getaway. Also, the term "crowd" is used only relatively to Maui. Even during the busy months a tourist will not experience the congestion or stress found on the mainland. There are advantages and disadvantages when visiting from one month to another and with a little planning you will have the vacation or visit of a lifetime. Remember to travel safe, give someone a lei, and always ...hang loose.
