There are many good places on Maui to go snorkeling. Below are a few
tips about snorkel gear.
To CHECK THE FIT of a snorkel mask that you want to buy or have
in storage do the following:
- 1. Hold the mask to your face without the
strap on.
- 2. Break in through your nose. This should create an air tight
seal and the mask should stick to your face without any air
escaping.
- 3. The strap only holds the mask
in place, cinching the mask down tight will not keep it from
leaking. Don't tighten the strap down tight.
To keep the MASK CLEAN from fog:
- 1. Before going into the water clean the inside and outside of
the mask with tooth past (Original crest will do fine). The reason
is the toothpaste will not burn your eyes and it is easy to remove.
Also, it is slightly abrasive but will not hurt your mask. Usually,
I put a dab on my finger and rub it around on the inside of the mask.
You can rinse it at the ocean or with a beach shower. Also, spit
once in the mask and rinse it in the ocean. You do not need to buy
the mask cleaners this will work perfect!
ENTERING the water without fins on (one
method):
- 1. NEVER put your mask over your head like sun glasses.
- 2. Put your mask under your chin around your neck! Or, better yet,
put it on and have your snorkel in your mouth!!
- 3. CARRY YOUR FINS INTO THE WATER.
- 4. Once you are about waist deep put on fin on at a time. Use your
right hand to put on the left fin. Then use your left hand to put
on the right fin.
- 5. I don't expect a beginner to go snorkeling in surf, so unless
you have a purpose or understand the conditions and how to adjust
for them, find another location to snorkel in.

Maui Vacation Condo-
Maui has many excellent snorkel spots. There are some great maps on
the different locations. Kaanapali
Beach has some good snorkeling at Black
Rock. The Whaler is only a few minutes walk to the snorkel entry.
If you are interested in SCUBA there are many places to get certified,
brush up on skills, or have a dive lead. Or, you can venture out on your
own; with a buddy of course.
