Surfing in Maui is for both the beginner and advanced rider. Depending on the time of year the waves on Maui can be big and dangerous, depending on what break is surfed.

During the winter, Maui has a couple surf breaks that are known around the world. Perhaps the best known break on the North/West side of Maui is called Honolua Bay. This is a beautiful wave that breaks right on a north swell (during the fall and winter). when Honolua Bay is breaking it will be crowded with surfers and only advanced riders should venture out.

Honolua Bay is about twenty minutes north of The Whaler and Gail's Maui condo. If you are not a surfer, but want to watch some beautiful waves this is the place to go.

In the summer the swells come from the south. For the beginner there are many places to learn to surf and class is held in Lahaina, only a ten minute drive south of Gail's Maui condo and The Whaler at Kaanapali Beach.

For the more advanced surfer there are fun summer waves that break on the west and south side of Maui. In Lahaina there are a few fun breaks. However, when the big south swells come in the spot to be is Maalaea Harbor.

In regard to Kaanapali Beach and waves -
The surf at Kaanapali Beach is a shore break. Basically, the waves break on the shore in a dramatic and powerful fashion. For the advanced body surfer and skim boarder, this makes for an incredible ride. However, there is a heavy under tow that if not understood how to manage can lead to some very dangerous situations!

IF YOU ARE NOT SURE HOW TO ENTER AND EXIT THE OCEAN UNDER HEAVY SURF, USE CAUTION AND CARE.

Remember, if the surf is big on Maui you can always find a calm beach. Ask the locals or hotel employees where to go during high surf!
